At the state and local
level, WashBAC organizes lectures, attends meetings, and helps activate
public expressions of concern on relevant issues to WashBAC's mission.
Recently, WashBAC has:
- Presented free lectures and films to educate people about how
citizens can become involved in influencing policies surrounding
biotechnology. Some of our organizational hosts include: the Gray Panthers, the Labor Party,
UW Alumni Association, and Swedish Hospital.
- Co-petitioned, with other environmental groups, to persuade
the EPA to regulate genetically engineered corn, wheat, etc.
- Helped organize an all day teach-in during the Seattle WTO
meetings (1999) on issues surrounding the patenting of life
forms.
- Produced flyers, press releases, letters to the editor, articles
for publication, and World Wide Web sites like this one.
- Tracked local bioengineering industries and state subsidies
regarding genetically engineered crops and pharmaceuticals.
- Served as a resource for local media.
- Researched genetic privacy and genetic discrimination issues.
